Healthier gums through laser dentistry

The health of your gums is an important part of your overall health.  The appearance of your gums is a vital part of your smile.  Often, we take our gums for granted and think more about our teeth when thinking about dental care.  The tissue and bone that hold our teeth in place need careful maintenance and treatment as well as the visible teeth.  With the use of laser dentistry, cosmetic and corrective procedures can be performed on gum tissue with greater precision for the dentist and less pain for the patient.

Gum disease linked to health problems

Many Americans suffer from gum disease but are unaware of the risks gum disease may pose if left untreated.  If your gums are inflamed, sensitive or prone to bleeding, you may have gingivitis.  Gingivitis is the medical term for inflammation of the gums.  Unfortunately, many people have the impression that the use of mouthwash will solve the problem.  If left untreated by professionals, like Dr. Ted Morgan and Dr. Amanda Rockwood of Morgan Dental Care, gingivitis may progress to periodontitis, a more severe gum disease.   Periodontitis has been linked to the increased risk of stroke and other serious heart disease.  It is also known to be an indicator or complicating factor in other serious health problems.  The use of dental lasers on the gums during the early stages of periodontits, however, can have a positive effect on restoring the health of the gums.

Using lasers to restore gum health

Specifically, dental lasers can be used to kill bacteria on diseased gums.  By using laser to clean the gums, the roots of the teeth in the affected area and the tooth pocket itself, the bacteria causing the disease can be killed and the growth of healthy new tissue can be promoted.  When new, healthy tissue replaces the diseased gums, the risk of bone loss and tooth loss is decreased.

If you suspect that you have gingivitis or periodontitis, or if you have symptoms of gum disease, please don’t delay in seeking treatment.  If fear of pain is preventing you from seeking treatment, laser dental work can be painless.   In addition, the dentists of Morgan Dental Care, Dr. Morgan and Dr. Rockwood, are certified as sedation dentists.  Dental sedation will allow you to remain relaxed and comfortable throughout any dental procedure.  There are solutions for patients who are anxious about dental procedures.

Laser dentistry when applied to the gums can also have a positive cosmetic effect.  Using lasers, the cosmetic dentist can reshape or contour gum tissue around each tooth.  If necessary, extra gum tissue that may appear around the teeth can be removed.  Laser use on the gums is precise and can be painless.  When used in conjunction with other cosmetic dental procedures on the surface of the teeth, the use of lasers on the gums perfects the smile in every detail.
