Eight Powerful Facts Related to Dentistry from Your Portland Maine Dentist
Welcome to the Morgan Dental Care family. We are honored that you have chosen us as your Portland Maine dentist and will be pleased to provide you with a unique, high quality health care service. Not all dental practices are alike, so we want you to know something about our practice to be sure you have made the best choice. It is important that you know what our objectives are to better understand why we recommend and do the things we do for your dental health. We want you to know some of the facts that have shaped our beliefs about dental health. Here are eight powerful facts that have influenced the countless decisions that have made us what we are today:
Powerful fact #1: Excellent dental health is a choice. Dental disease is preventable. That means keeping your teeth all your life is mostly a matter of starting soon enough and then making up your mind to do what it takes. What you will need is the right combination of lifestyle, home care habits and professional care. For us, your dental team, this means that part of our mission will be to work with you to plan a strategy that keeps your dental health optimal throughout your life. It means we will continue to stay abreast of new information so we can take full advantage of anything that will help you.
Powerful fact #2: People who keep their teeth have a life expectancy ten years longer than people who lose their teeth! This startling statistic demonstrates how incredibly important your teeth are to your overall wellness. Another important related fact recently gained public awareness: there is a direct correlation between gum disease and heart disease. This connection means we must take the job of keeping your teeth healthy very seriously. Imagine if you had a heart condition that, if corrected, would add ten years to your life. If there were a way to correct it, how seriously would you consider doing it? We think we should take your dental health no less seriously, because of the direct connection to your overall health and longevity.
Powerful fact #3: Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss, and 80% of the adult population has it! We know how to treat and prevent gum disease, but there is no pill, rinse, or toothpaste that will do it. This has led us in our practice to focus first on the health of your gums by checking them thoroughly and often. And since the damage that gum disease causes is irreversible, we treat it as soon as we can identify it, usually before you have become aware of it (gum disease is painless until the advanced stages). This means, if you do need treatment, it will be less complicated (probably non-surgical), and the results will be better. Besides preventing possible loss of teeth, and lowering your risk for other serious diseases, achieving optimal health for your gums means keeping your mouth feeling its best, your smile looking its best and keeping your breath its freshest.
Powerful fact #4: New dental materials and techniques can bring filled, broken or decayed teeth back to their original strength, function and beauty. The old standard filling material called amalgam (“silver filling”) is actually 50% mercury, and it corrodes, turns black, and may weaken your teeth. Since a variety of new materials will bond to your teeth, look like natural teeth, strengthen weakened teeth, and contain no toxic metals, we can’t imagine any reason to go back to using yesterday’s filling material. Part of our planning with you will be not only to use the new materials in any restorations you may need, but also to offer you, at your option, a plan to replace any of your old fillings that you find unsightly or that may cause damage to your teeth.
Powerful fact #5: New dental techniques make it possible to actually replace lost teeth permanently. Even if you have gotten a late start in seeking dental health, and have already lost one or more of your teeth, dental implants can be the solution that gets you back to having solid, functional and natural-looking teeth again. If you have missing teeth or some already replaced with dentures or partials, we will be glad to develop a plan to give you the best in tooth replacements.
Powerful fact #6: Improving smiles changes lives. Psychologists have proven that our appearance has a profound effect on how others respond to us and therefore on our probability of succeeding in life. The look of your smile is probably the single most important factor that influences others’ first impressions of you. New techniques and materials make it possible to do almost anything with your smile from perfecting a minor flaw to an entire make over. We can offer not only whitening, bonding, veneers, and implants, but also orthodontics right here in our office, including ‘invisible braces’. We can show you with computer imaging what you will look like before anything is done. Today’s cosmetic dentistry is for anyone who wasn’t born with the perfect smile and who wants to improve their life.
Powerful Fact #7: Dental care is a personalized and technical, one-to-one service unique to each dental team providing it. As such, the quality of the service will be as good as the skill, care, knowledge and judgement of the providers. Dental technology, like many other technologies, is constantly and rapidly changing and improving. That is why we take time from our schedule for several days of continuing education each year to keep ourselves current with improvements in dentistry. We want to be sure you will always get world-class care. And like anything else, the best is rarely the least expensive in the short term. But, we think the best quality is usually the best value over time and that you should know what the best is before you make a choice about your care.
Powerful Fact #8: Fear of dentistry is no longer an obstacle to receiving complete care. With modern sedation techniques, even the worst of “dental phobics” can completely relax during complex treatment. We have incorporated relaxation methods into our practice to make great dental care available to people who were previously excluded from receiving care by their fear. By taking a safe and effective pill, most people can get their treatment done in as little as one or two visits while dozing off, and then wake up with little or no memory of the work.
If these eight powerful facts and our way of approaching your care, as described here, sounds good to you, you have made the right choice in selecting our office for your dental care. We are confident that you will be pleased with your decision, and we will do everything in our power to honor your trust. It is our desire to give you the best in care and personal service while you are with us. The result we want most is your satisfaction, your trust and your optimal health and wellness. We at Morgan Dental Care look forward to providing with you with the very best care possible.
